Flu season is here, and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC) providers are urging everyone to get their flu shot now.
“Now is the ideal time to get your flu shot,” says Lori Kelley, YVFWC Infection Preventionist.
Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection. Getting the vaccine now is recommended.
Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic medical sites throughout the Yakima Valley are now offering flu shot clinics, where patients and community members can drop by without an appointment and get their flu shot for $25. Flu vaccinations are encouraged for everyone ages 6 months and older, you do not have to be a patient of the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic to take advantage of the flu clinic hours.

SALEM – Lancaster Family Health Center (LFHC) has expanded its footprint in Salem with the addition of a new 35,000 square foot community health center.
“LFHC has been operating out of a medical office on Beverly Avenue in Salem since 2001 and the team has done an outstanding job delivering care,” CEO Carlos Olivares said. “However, in order to serve our patients, we needed a larger facility that would enable us to continue to deliver the high-quality health care they deserve.”
The state- of-the-art health center offers LFHC patients a pharmacy, 12 dental operatories, more than 30 exam and procedure rooms, and a teaching kitchen. The clinic also includes integrated behavioral health consultants, registered dietitians, and WIC Nutrition Services.
“The clinic will open with approximately 60 employees, but we will grow as we move past our initial January opening,” Morgan Wharton, LFHC Clinic Manager said.
Lancaster Family Health Center at Lancaster, located at 255 Lancaster Dr. NE, opened its dental practice on Jan. 10. The medical clinic opened its doors, Wednesday, Jan. 25.
“We outgrew our space at the Beverly Avenue location,” Clinic Medical Director, Dr. Heather Diaz said. “We are so excited to be able to offer more space and a brand-new facility for our patients, as we continue to offer excellent care.”
The original location is re-opening as “Lancaster Family Health Center at Beverly” on January 25. The clinic will offer same-day access for established LFHC patients who would like to be seen for acute health care issues.
“LFHC is accepting new patients and we are all excited to share our new facility with the Salem community,” Wharton said.
Lancaster Family Health Center is a federally qualified community health center that offers comprehensive primary health care services including, prenatal and postpartum care, family planning, pharmacy, dental care, nutrition services, behavioral health, and community health workers.

Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC) dietitians are helping women learn ways to have a healthy pregnancy, starting with the proper amount of folic acid added to their diet.
January 8-14 is National Folic Acid Awareness Week, and YVFWC providers are stressing the importance of folic acid in a healthy pregnancy.
Folic acid is a B-vitamin that is necessary for proper cell growth. If taken before and during early pregnancy, folic acid can prevent up to 70 percent of some serious birth defects of the brain and spine, called neural tube defects.
“We recommend all women take a multi-vitamin including folic acid and vitamin D for good health . Making this habit prior to pregnancy helps to ensure baby has adequate folic acid from the beginning of conception,” YVFWC Dietitian Briana Walker said.
National experts agree: women need folic acid even if they are not planning to become pregnant since almost half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned.
“Supplementing with folic acid is easy, all multivitamins and prenatal vitamins have it, including the gummies. The important thing is to get started right away, don’t wait until your first visit with your OB. Most over-the-counter supplements are also very affordable starting around $4 per bottle,” Walker added.
Women can also add folic acid in their diet by eating fortified foods like grains, pastas, beans, peas, and leafy greens, or breakfast cereals.
“Breakfast cereal is one way you can add folic acid in your diet. As a bonus it is usually well tolerated by pregnant women, even in the first trimester. Look for one that is high in fiber and low in sugar,” she added.
When looking for cereal with folic acid, Walker says to choose one that has 100 percent of the daily recommended value of folic acid. A single serving of many breakfast cereals has the amount of folic acid that a woman needs each day.
“You can look at the nutrition label on the side of the cereal box for the serving size and percent of daily value,” she explained.
Women are encouraged to visit any YVFWC clinic, and speak with a dietitian today about ways to add folic acid to your diet.

TOPPENISH – Late last year, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC) and Northwest Community Action Center (NCAC) were awarded a grant to bring the YouthBuild Yakima Valley program back to the area.
The core of the YouthBuild Yakima Valley program is to rebuild futures and restore hope for youth and young adults with extreme academic and/or socio-economic challenges. Unlike most youth programs, the YouthBuild program provides holistic training to guide young adults toward becoming socially and financially responsible community members.
The $1 million grant was awarded last fall for a two-year program. This allows for a total of 62 participants, 31 in each cohort of the program.
YouthBuild Yakima Valley is now recruiting in the Mid and Lower Valley, and plans to begin in mid-February. NCAC will provide young adults without a high school diploma the opportunity to continue their education, build skills, and serve the community. YouthBuild is an education and construction training program, along with new opportunities for nursing/medical assistant training. Partners include the Toppenish, Granger, Grandview, Mabton, and Yakama Nation school districts; Habitat for Humanity; and Yakima Valley Technical Skills Center.
To be eligible for participation individuals must be 16-24 years of age, have left traditional schooling, and meet one of the following factors: low income, in foster care, have a disability, child of an incarcerated parent, migrant youth, or an offender. They must also be a resident of Toppenish, Granger, Grandview, Mabton, or the Yakama Nation.
YouthBuild is a national program funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Labor – Employment and Training Administration. The goal of this program is to help young people earn their high school diploma or General Education Development Certificate while gaining occupational skills training that prepares them for career placement.
YouthBuild also teaches work-readiness and leadership skills along with hands-on construction or nursing/medical assistant training. Participants in construction training will have the chance to build affordable housing within the community and receive a nationally recognized construction trade certificate. Those who participate in nursing/medical assistant training will also gain a state-recognized certificate.
To learn more about the YouthBuild Yakima Valley program, call (509) 865-7630. Applications and information are also available at the Northwest Community Action Center, located at 706 Rentschler Lane, Toppenish, WA.

TOPPENISH –Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC) Nutrition Services is unveiling its teaching kitchen in Toppenish in the coming weeks.
“Right now we are finalizing the kitchen, trying our recipes out with staff and making sure we have all the equipment we need,” Teaching Kitchen Coordinator Flor Flores said.
The kitchen is part of the new Toppenish Medical-Dental Clinic campus. The teaching kitchen classes will help expand the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of care. Patients now receive dental, medical, prenatal, behavioral health and nutritional care all in one place, with one unified health care team.
Now, patients will also have the opportunity to sign up for cooking classes that will focus on their area of health need.
“Over 70 patients have signed up for our classes,” Flores said. “Most of the patients who have signed up are living with diabetes, so we’ll start with classes that focus on healthy foods and recipes that will help maintain blood sugar levels.”
The teaching kitchen will utilize the Cooking Matters curriculum, part of the No Kid Hungry network, which aims to end child hunger in the United States by introducing innovative hunger solutions in communities.
As the program grows, the teaching kitchen plans to include classes for expecting moms, breastfeeding moms, and seniors.
The first classes will begin for patients in mid-February.
